Originally published in 1940 by Phi Epsilon Kappa as a quarterly publication for its fraternity members, The Physical Educator is one of the longest standing journals providing research-based articles relating to physical education, health, recreation, and other areas. This quarterly periodical is now available for nonmembers and libraries. Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity is a national professional fraternity for persons engaged in or pursuing careers in physical education, health, recreation, dance, human performance, exercise science, sports medicine, and sports management.

Dr. Thomas H. Sawyer
Thomas H. Sawyer, Ed.D., is a NAS Fellow and professor of physical education and recreation and sport management at Indiana State University. Dr. Sawyer has over 40 years' experience in higher education. He began as an instructor of health and physical education, has been a director of recreational sports, department head, department chair, associate athletic director, director of articulation and transfer, director of the college prison education programs, executive director of regional education centers, and an interim dean of continuing education and is ending his career, by choice, as a full professor teaching sport management theory to undergraduate and graduate students. He has written over 175 peer-reviewed articles for notable professional journals, made over 250 state, regional, national, and international presentations, and written 12 professional books and over 45 chapters. Dr. Sawyer has been selected to receive Indiana State University’s three most distinguished awards given to faculty—the Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award (1995), Distinguished Service Award (1997), and the Theodore Dreiser Distinguished Research and Creativity Award (2010). He also was awarded the NASPE and Indiana AHPERD Sport Management Professional Award (2008). Finally, he has served as a state president (Indiana), district vice president (Midwest), national association president (AAALF), chaired numerous committees, editor of the Indiana AHPERD journal, and chaired the JOPERD Editorial and Policy Boards. He has been a member of AAHPERD since 1966.
