PALAESTRA’s mission is threefold:
Dr. Martin E. Block
I have been at UVA since 1992, and I teach in the areas of adapted physical education (APE) and motor development. Specific coursework that I teach includes APE for Individuals with Development Disabilities, Physical Education for Children with Severe Disabilities, Seminar in APE, and Motor Development. I also am the Director of the Masters Program in APE here at UVA, and I am the primary supervisor for our Masters students during their practicum in the Albemarle County Public Schools. I also have contacts and have created practicum opportunities for our students at the Virginia Institute for Autism, Little Keswick School, Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center, Charlottesville Area Special Olympics, and the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. My major consulting work has been with Special Olympics, Inc., helping them create and implement the Motor Activities Training Program—a special sports program for children and adults with severe disabilities. As a hobby I enjoy coaching locally in youth basketball, soccer, and volleyball programs.
